Tom studied Spanish and Economics at Middlebury College in Vermont and completed a Masters in International Management at Thunderbird in Glendale, Arizona.

He spent 23 years outside the continental United States, residing for 20 years in Mexico City. Tom also studied in Spain and worked professionally in the Caribbean, Central America, the Far Pacific islands and, as a young corporate employee, did projects in Venezuela and Ecuador in the mid 1970's.
